Full program description

This is a web-based course in Laboratory Animal Science with a focus on electrofishing as a survey method.

The course covers wading electrofishing, where you wade in a watercourse using an electrofishing unit that generates a weak current to temporarily stun fish. The fish can then be netted, identified, and measured before being released. The method provides reliable data on species presence, density, and size distribution in smaller watercourses.

The course covers basic fish biology as well as Swedish legislation important for survey fishing. You will gain basic knowledge of electrical theory, equipment, safety, species identification, and gentle fish handling and release.

The course also covers fish reactions to electrical current, injury risks, anaesthesia methods, and the 3R principles. After each module, a short online knowledge test is completed.
